The Hungarian-American Fulbright Program has administered over 1,100 scholarships to U.S. citizens to Hungary since 1978. These grants vary in financial value and cover costs associated with study, research, and/or lecturing at graduate or post-doctoral level at accredited universities and academic institutions. While they apply directly through IIE, all American applicants are welcome to approach the Commission directly for advice.
Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program
The core Fulbright Scholar Program sends 800 U.S. faculty and professionals abroad each year. Grantees lecture and conduct research in a wide variety of academic and professional fields.
Competition for Academic Year 2027/2028 is open between mid-February, 2026 – mid-September, 2026 and the results are usually announced the following spring.
The grant package includes the following:
- monthly stipend in US dollars which varies according to the type of grant and the grantee’s position.
- monthly subsistence allowance in Hungarian forints made up of monthly maintenance allowance and monthly housing allowance when housing is not provided by the host institution.
- travel and relocation allowance made up of one time round trip travel allowance reimbursing the actual cost of direct, most economical airfare; one time dependent travel allowance; one time settling-in allowance; monthly dependent allowance.
A scholar must stay for a minimum of three months. Initial recruitment and evaluation is done by the Institute of International Education (IIE).

Fulbright U.S. Student Program
The U.S. Student Program is designed to give American citizens opportunities for personal development through cultural exchange. Projects may include university coursework, independent library or field research, or a combination. Nearly 400 Americans have studied in Hungary through Fulbright Hungary.
Awards to United States citizens are for postgraduate study in Hungary. Students can either follow a regular curriculum or spend the year in independent study. There is no restriction on the field of study.
The award covers standard living expenses, tuition fees up to $4,000 and roundtrip travel. Although the award is normally for one academic year, the Commission is able to offer a limited number of students the opportunity to extend or renew their grant.
There is no upper age limit and candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent.
Initial screening is done in the United States by the Institute of International Education (IIE).
The AY 2027-2028 Fulbright U.S. Student Program application is open between early April, 2026 – mid-October, 2026 and the results are usually announced the following spring.

The Fulbright Specialist Program (FSP) promotes linkages between U.S. scholars and professionals and their counterparts at host institutions overseas. The program awards grants to qualified U.S. faculty and professionals, in select disciplines, to engage in short-term collaborative two- to six-week projects at eligible institutions in over 140 countries worldwide.
Fulbright Intercountry Lecturing Program
The Fulbright Intercountry Lecturing Program provides US scholars while in Europe with opportunities to enrich their professional and cultural experience outside of their country of assignment.
The Fulbright Schuman Program, administered by the Commission for Educational Exchange between the United States and Belgium, is jointly financed by the U.S. State Department and the Directorate-General for Education and Culture of the European Commission. It funds projects exclusively dealing with U.S.-EU relations, EU institutions, or EU policy.
Fulbright-Hays Summer Seminars Abroad
The program provides short-term study and travel seminars abroad for U.S. educators in the social sciences and humanities for the purpose of improving their understanding and knowledge of the peoples and cultures of other countries. Support is generally made available through interagency agreements. The Department of Education transfers funds through the State Department to Fulbright commissions in various countries to pay the costs associated with administering seminars. This partnership allows the program to use the services and expertise of binational organizations to plan and conduct seminars for U.S. educators.
Fulbright-Hays–Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA)
This program provides grants to colleges and universities to fund individual doctoral students who conduct research in other countries, in modern foreign languages and area studies for periods of six to 12 months.
10 days to 12 months programs for K–12 educators from elementary, middle, and high schools in the United States.
The Fulbright Classroom Teacher Exchange Program has been discontinued, beginning with the 2014-2015 academic year.
Increase and Diversify Education Abroad for U.S. Students (IDEAS) Program
The program provides grants and trainings to build U.S. colleges and universities’ capacity to engage in international exchanges, including through the development of international partnerships.
Study Abroad Engagement Grant (SAEG)
The State Department USA Study Abroad Branch works with foreign institutions to increase their capacity to better attract and host U.S. study abroad students.
Embassy Science Fellows Program
The Embassy Science Fellows (ESF) Program connects U.S. embassies, consulates, and partner nations with U.S. government science and technology experts.
